There are dozens of different qualifications that a financial adviser may have, but they’re not all the same.

Financial adviser qualifications are something of an alphabet soup and many of them sound very similar. But while some qualifications show that an adviser is an expert in their field, others only show they’ve passed the minimum threshold exam. You don’t have to know off by heart all the different qualifications that an adviser might have passed before you can work out whether or not they’re capable of giving you good financial advice (thankfully!), but it’s probably useful to be aware of some of the acronyms that may follow their name.

The terms used and rules that govern how they operate aren't exactly straightforward, not helped by the fact that a few years ago the rules around financial advisers were completely changed. Whereas in the past there'd been two types of adviser – those who worked for an individual company and those who were independent, the changes created a third type of adviser – a sort of hybrid between the two.
